What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme helps you replace your fossil fuel heating with efficient, low carbon heating systems. Grants are available for air and ground source heat pumps and biomass boilers.

  • It is open to people in England and Wales
  • In Scotland an interest-free loan or a home energy efficiency grant may be available instead
  • In Northern Ireland, you may be able to get a grant to replace your boiler

How much can you get?

The value of the grants are:

£7,500 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump
£5,000 off the cost and installation of a biomass boiler
£6,000 off the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump

The grants help you with the upfront cost of installing the low carbon heating systems.

Types of boilers available

Grants for a hybrid heat pump system (eg a combination of gas boiler and air source heat pump) are not available.

All systems installed must meet standards including minimum efficiency levels.

The system’s maximum capacity must be less than 45kWth – anything over is not eligible.

Who qualifies?

To qualify both you and your property must meet the criteria set out below.

Check if your eligible

You must:

  • Own the property you’re applying for (including if it’s a business, a second home, or property you rent out)
  • You have installed your new heating system on or after 1st April 2022. 
  • Be replacing fossil fuel heating (oil, gas or electric)

You are still eligible if you’ve already had energy efficient funding for your property. 

Check if your properties eligible

Your property must :

  • Have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.

We apply through Ofgem, who will contact you to check your application. The grant is the taken off the final price.

FAQs

What properties are not eligible?

You cannot get a grant for:

  • most new build properties
  • social housing
  • Properties already given government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler
  • New build properties are still being built are not eligible.

    If you have moved into a finished new build with a fossil fuel boiler, you may be able to get a grant for a heat pump.

Your self build property is eligible if:

  • You or the original owner built it yourself or you paid a builder to build it
  • it’s never been owned by a business or organisation
  • You need to show your installer proof your property is a self build

Yes, you pay the balance after the grant has been subtracted from the total.

You can get a grant for a biomass boiler if:

  • your property is off the gas grid
  • your property is in a rural location
  • your boiler has an emissions certificate showing polluting emissions are low

You cannot get a grant to install a biomass boiler in a self build property.

Insulation measures cover:

  • Cavity wall insulation (including party walls)
  • Solid wall insulation (both external and internal)
  • Loft insulation
  • Pitched roof insulation
  • Flat roof insulation
  • Under floor insulation
  • Solid floor insulation
  • Park home insulation
  • Room-in-roof insulation
