WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
We’re looking for a senior technology leader to take end-to-end ownership of our platform, engineering capability, and technology operating model as we scale.
This is a hands-on leadership role in a business with a complex, mission-critical platform. You’ll balance strategy with execution — modernising legacy systems, improving reliability and security, and building the team and foundations needed to support long-term growth.
You’ll be:
- Hands-on and pragmatic – able to lead strategy and step into architecture, delivery, or incident response when needed
- Experienced in legacy modernisation – comfortable evolving end-of-life or complex systems without disruptive “big bang” rewrites
- A strong team builder – experienced in hiring, coaching, and creating a culture of quality and ownership
- Commercially minded – able to prioritise investment across reliability, risk reduction, efficiency, and new capability
- Confident leading distributed teams and partners – improving accountability, assurance, and ways of working while continuing to deliver
KEY RESPONSBILITIES
Leadership & Strategy
- Own and communicate the technology strategy and operating model aligned with business growth plans
- Establish technology as a strategic capability with clear governance, metrics, reporting, and leadership visibility
- Create and maintain a roadmap to reduce risk, enable scale, and strengthen in-house capability over time
Platform Ownership
- Take end-to-end ownership of the core platform’s reliability, security, performance, and maintainability
- Lead architectural decisions that reduce complexity, remove duplication, and support scale
- Ensure appropriate environment discipline and controls (development, staging, production, access governance, auditability)
- Provide technical leadership for integrating modern digital products into core operational workflows (APIs, data flows, identity/access, observability)
Delivery & Engineering Execution
- Lead a balanced portfolio of work covering risk remediation, technical debt reduction, and high-impact improvements
- Establish predictable delivery practices including roadmapping, estimation, release management, QA strategy, and change control
- Strengthen engineering standards such as code review, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and incident management
- Drive an integration roadmap enabling customer-facing digital journeys while maintaining operational reliability and data quality
Security, Compliance & Risk
- Partner with leadership to reduce security and data protection risk (GDPR, access governance, supplier controls)
- Commission and act on independent assurance (e.g. security reviews, penetration testing)
- Implement pragmatic incident response processes and tooling
- Team Building & Capability Development
- Build a high-performing onshore engineering function with the right mix of roles (e.g. platform engineers, DevOps/SRE, QA, product)
- Lead structured knowledge capture and transfer into documentation, training, and shared ownership
- Define career pathways, performance frameworks, and a culture of high standards and continuous improvement
Vendor & Partner Management
- Manage technology partners as a capability multiplier rather than a single point of dependency
- Improve delivery assurance through clear access boundaries, quality expectations, documentation, SLAs, and measurable outcomes
- Create and execute a transition plan to reduce critical dependency on external parties over time
SKILLS/ QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Essential
- Senior leadership experience in software/technology (Head of Engineering/Technology, Engineering Director, or similar)
- Track record of modernising legacy platforms while maintaining business continuity
- Strong knowledge of web application architecture and delivery practices
- Experience with PHP (Laravel) and modern frontend stacks (React, TypeScript, Next.js)
- Demonstrable experience building and leading engineering teams
- Strong stakeholder management, able to translate technical trade-offs into business outcomes
- Experience leading in distributed team environments
Desirable
- Experience in operationally intensive or regulated environments (e.g. field services, logistics, compliance)
- Familiarity with pragmatic legacy modernisation approaches
- Experience supporting data governance and reporting reliability
- Experience leading or supporting security and GDPR programmes
