What is the Great British Insulation Scheme?

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a government scheme to reduce carbon emissions and fuel poverty nationwide. It started in Spring 2023 and runs until 2026.

It complements the ECO4 scheme and should save homes more then £300 per year (1).

Over 400,000 homes will be eligible under the scheme.

How does it work?

To qualify your home needs to be assessed. A survey will highlight the best single insulation measure to improve your properties energy efficiency.

Who qualifies?

GBIS is divided into 2 groups. A general group and a low income eligibility group.

To be eligible for the general group, you must:
  • Live in a home within Council Tax bands A-D in England, A-E in Scotland and A-E in Wales
  • Have an EPC rating of D or below

If you’re eligible you may get a single insulation measure and have to pay towards the cost.

To be eligible for the low income eligibility group, you must:
  • Live in a home within Council Tax bands A-D in England, A-E in Scotland and A-E in Wales
  • Have an EPC rating of D or below

If you’re eligible you may receive a single insulation measure.

FAQs

How do I find out if I have an EPC and what the rating is?

You can get your EPC rating on the EPC register. If you don’t have an EPC we are happy provide you with an EPC.

Check an old council tax bill, call your local council or check on the gov.uk.website.

Depending on your eligibility you may have to pay a customer contribution.

Funding is available to both social housing and landlords. Tenants must meet certain criteria around income and EPC rating.

We have our own team of installers who are fully accredited and will carry out your survey and decide the best measure for your home.

The GBIS scheme installs single low-cost insulation measures in homes.

If you are not eligible you can still pay for insulation. We can help to have loft, cavity wall and solid wall insulation to be installed in your home.

Top reasons include: Health – homes with good insulation are better for your health. Damp – Prevent damp as it can cause mould and mildew. Better for the planet – waste less energy heating your home and cut your carbon emissions.

You may be eligible for one or more energy efficient measures, however, we are not able to advise on what they may be before carrying out an assessment. After your property has had a retrofit assessment survey and a retrofit coordinator has designed the plan for your home, at that point we can advise on which measures would work best for your home.

This will be confirmed once your property has been assessed.
