Nest is Wales’ national fuel poverty scheme. Delivered in partnership with British Gas, it has improved 60,000 homes since launching in 2011.
Thousands of low-income households, including many in remote, rural communities, have benefited from warmer, healthier and cheaper to run homes.
Nest has also contributed to Wales’ wider net zero and carbon reduction targets.
Nest homes had the lowest energy efficiency ratings, with EPC ratings of E, F and G. Improving these homes required multiple measures to be delivered together, including:
Each home was designed as a whole-house retrofit in line with PAS 2035.
Many homes on the Nest scheme were in small villages in remote locations. Far from suppliers, engineers and contractors.
This meant surveys needed to be right first time. A missing photograph or measurement could mean a return journey, another appointment and more disruption for the customer.
After surveying, every property would need tight coordination between different trades, including heating engineers, electricians, ventilation installers, window and door teams.
A delay to one measure could set back the whole job.
Every Nest property was treated as one coordinated installation.
Ventilation was designed in from the start, in line with PAS 2035 and Part F. For heat pumps and solar we talked customers through how the new technology worked.
We partnered with local subcontractors and suppliers across Wales, while materials were ordered early and delivered straight to site or collected.
One single point of contact managed the whole job for the customer. Someone who understood the full programme, not just one measure.
Floor and furniture protection, careful scheduling of heating/hot water/electricity interruptions worked together to reduce disruption.
