A smart way to manage heating costs and decarbonise

Luke Loveridge interviewed Mark Murton, Head of Partnering at Schneider Electric, to discuss the role of Drayton Controls and their Wiser smart thermostat in energy management and sustainability.

Who are Drayton Controls?

Drayton Controls is a UK-based manufacturing business. We’re really proud to have been in the UK for over 75 years. We’re based down in Plymouth, Devon, where we manufacture all our products for the UK market. Our smart home solution, Wiser, is a game-changer in energy management. It’s also available globally, with distribution in places as far as Australia.

What makes the Wiser smart thermostat unique?

Wiser is designed for the UK market as a smart home and energy management solution. What really sets Wiser apart is its simplicity. While it looks like a traditional heating control, it functions like a highly sophisticated smart system.

Wiser offers flexibility—allowing you to control individual rooms’ temperatures and schedules based on your needs. We offer radiator thermostats for zoning and individual room control, and the system can also manage underfloor heating, whether that’s gas or electric. It’s a comprehensive solution for homes looking to optimise their heating.

What are the main benefits of using a Wiser thermostat?

The key word with Wiser is control—control over individual room temperatures and energy usage. This is crucial when it comes to decarbonisation and working towards net zero. A typical home generates around 2,750 kilograms of carbon per year, and over 30% of that is related to heating.

By using Wiser, homeowners can make a big impact on reducing both their carbon footprint and their energy bills. With features like “away mode” and “eco mode,” Wiser users can save up to 30% on their heating bills each year. It’s a smart way to manage heating costs while contributing to decarbonisation.

How do you work with Eco Approach?

We’re really excited to be partnering with Eco Approach. They’re a young and innovative company with a fantastic end-to-end retrofit solution. Homeowners can use Eco Approach’s product selector to find the right Wiser system for their home and purchase it directly through the platform.

But the partnership goes further than that. Eco Approach also connects homeowners with approved installers, making it a seamless, one-stop solution for selecting, purchasing, and installing the Wiser system. This collaboration ensures that homeowners can easily access and install the best smart energy solutions for their homes.
