How Are Solar Cells Made

Solar cells, also known as photovoltaic cells, are devices that convert sunlight into electricity. The p-n junction is formed by doping the silicon wafers with specific materials to create a positive (p-type) and negative (n-type) charge. This process involves diffusing atoms such as boron and phosphorus into the silicon wafers through a high-temperature furnace or a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process.

Once the p-n junction has been created, the silicon wafers are coated with a thin layer of anti-reflective coating to improve the cell’s efficiency. This coating helps to reduce the amount of sunlight that is reflected off the surface of the cell, allowing more light to be absorbed and converted into electricity.

The next step in the production of solar cells is the deposition of the metal contacts, which serve as the connection points for the electrical current generated by the cell. The metal contacts are typically made of silver or aluminum and are applied to the front and back of the cell using a screen printing or sputtering process.

After the metal contacts have been applied, the solar cells are assembled into modules by connecting them in series or parallel to achieve the desired voltage and current output. The modules are then encapsulated in a protective material, such as glass or plastic, to shield them from the elements and ensure their longevity.

Once the solar cells have been assembled into modules, they are ready to be installed and connected to a solar panel system. Solar panels are typically mounted on rooftops or in open fields to capture sunlight and generate electricity.
